Weight and Window Considerations

Faux wood blinds are designed to be a durable, moisture resistant, cost effective alternative to traditional wood blinds. Although these window treatments can be just as beautiful as real wood, they are heavier and require careful consideration prior to purchase. With all the options available with faux wood blinds, you need to consider the composition of the blinds, the slat size and type, as well as the window on which you plan to install the faux wood blind.

Consider the weight and composition of the faux wood blinds. When choosing a blind, remember that faux wood blinds are generally heavier than traditional wood blinds. This means that the weight of these blinds can be almost twice as much as a comparable wood blind. Composite blinds, or blinds that have a blend of PVC and wood pulp are generally lighter than their PVC alternatives but still heavier than wood. Composite faux wood blinds would work best if you are looking for a durable and moisture resistant alternative on a larger window. Pure extruded PVC faux wood blinds are, however, cheaper and more moisture resistant than the composite blends.

Slat size will also make a difference. Wider, thicker slats are heavier than thinner ones, but less are needed to fill the space of a window. When looking for the perfect faux wood blind, take into consideration not only the aesthetics of the slat width but also the overall weight of the blind. Wider slats look better than thinner ones on larger windows but consider the weight of raising or lowering a large blind. For large or tall windows, you may want to consider a faux wood blind with wide, very thin slats to reduce weight but still maintain the look of traditional wood shutters.

The size and placement of the window is key. Large widows look better with wider slats, but you'll need to consider the depth of the window as well. Wide slats may not work on a shallow window or one that might interfere with a doorknob. Also keep in mind that, although almost any size slat will be light enough to fit on a smaller window, narrower slats look better on smaller windows.

You may also want to consider who will be most likely to adjust the blinds. It's easier for taller and stronger individuals to raise and lower heavy blinds or reach high adjustments. Shorter individuals have an easier time adjusting cordless faux wood blinds or using a motorized tilt option to control light.

Faux wood blinds make a great alternative to real wood, but you need to consider their weight and slat options prior to choosing the perfect design for your home.
