Slat Widths for Looks and Light Control

Faux wood blinds come in a variety of slat widths to coordinate both aesthetics and light control with your existing needs. Keep in mind that the slat widths need to match the depth of your window as well. Wide slats on shallow windows will protrude from the sill while thin slats on deep windows might look unbalanced.

In general there are three different slat widths from which to choose:

  • 1” slats – the narrowest slats best suited for shallow windows
  • 2” slats – the most popular width and best suited for average windows
  • 2 5/8” or 3” slats – the widest slats. These are best for deep or larger windows

Shallow 1” slats look better on shallow windows or smaller windows. Because each slat is only one inch wide, each faux wood blind requires more slats in order to block the light when tilted shut. This means that, when the slats are tilted open, they can obstruct some of the view outside the window. It also means they take up more space at the top of the window when lifted, also blocking some of your view. These narrower slats are, however, the best option for narrow windows or windows next to doors where handle interference can be a problem.

2” slats are the most common choice for faux wood blinds. This slat width captures the look of traditional wood blinds and keeps a relatively clear view of the outside when tilted open since less slats are needed to cover a window. They are slightly wider however, and can be a problem if positioned near a door, but do take up considerably less space when raised.

Faux wood blinds with 2 5/8” or 3” slats provide exceptional views of the outdoors when tilted open and take up very little space when fully raised. Most people choose these wide slats because they most closely resemble the traditional look of wood shutters. They are deep, though, and are best suited for deep windows where the width of the slats will blend in with the depth of the window without extending into the room.
