Faux Wood Blinds Slat Styles and Shapes for Light and Privacy
Traditional slats on faux wood blinds are either flat or slightly curved to retain the look of conventional wood blinds and shutters. There are, however, different options when it comes to choosing a slat style for faux wood blinds. Although slat width is also important in configuring looks and light control, the actual shape of the slat can also tailor the faux wood blinds to better control light and privacy.
Faux wood blinds come in four basic slat shapes:
- Flat, plantation style
- Bevelled or Rounded top
- S-curve
- Thin
Faux wood blinds with thick, plantation-style slats most closely resemble wood blinds and shutters. These faux wood blinds provide the look and appeal of traditional wooden window treatments without the worry of warping. This particular thick slat does, however, interfere with views out windows when tilted open and can take up considerably more window space when raised. Because it is flat, these thick slats also allow a small amount of light to pass into the room even when they are tilted shut.
A good alternative to these thick slats are the bevelled or rounded slats. Faux wood blinds with these slat shapes still resemble traditional wood blinds and shutters but reduce the amount of light that seeps through when the slats are tilted shut. These slats are thinner at the inner an outer edges but still thick in the middle, giving them the look and feel of plantation blinds but with improved light control. The rounded tops of the slats can also give these faux wood blinds the look of naturally bevelled wood, further improving their appeal to individuals looking for alternatives to traditional wood blinds.
The S-curve slat is yet another variation on light control. The cross sections of these slats look like a subtle S and give you maximum light and privacy control. The small curves on either side of these slats fit together when the blind is tilted shut so that very little light can seep through, maximizing privacy and minimizing light. These faux wood blind slats are thinner than the bevelled or plantation slats so they don't have the same traditional appeal, but they do give you greater control over light.
Thin slats on faux wood blinds are best for individuals looking for the warmth and appeal of traditional wood blinds but want to maximize the view or light when the slats are tilted open. These thin slats also take up less room when the entire shade is raised and generally weigh less because of their size.
